Patch 12.1.5 gives Midnight its next raid boss, and for once he is not a new invention. Kith’ix has been buried in Warcraft’s lore since the Titans first ordered Azeroth, and the story of how he got out runs directly through the Patch 12.1 campaign you have just finished.
Who Is Kith’ix?
Kith’ix is one of the C’thraxxi, void creatures who served as high-ranking generals of the Black Empire for millennia under the Old Gods. Crucially, the C’thraxxi are far harder to kill than mortals - left unchecked, their corpses regenerate slowly over time, and outside help can accelerate that process considerably. That detail matters more to this patch than any boss mechanic.
When the Titans arrived and realised the Old Gods could only be contained rather than destroyed, the C’thraxxi generals were killed and sealed away alongside their masters. Kith’ix slept until Keeper Loken - by then corrupted by Yogg-Saron’s influence from beneath Ulduar - freed him and Zakajz to hunt down Tyr and Archaedas, who had stolen the Discs of Norgannon along with the evidence of Loken’s crimes.
Tyr stayed behind in what is now Lordaeron so the others could escape, and destroyed himself with enough force to kill Zakajz outright. Kith’ix survived the blast, fled southwest and collapsed into hibernation in the mountains that would one day form the heart of the Zandalari Empire. The Aqir War and the Founding of Zul’Aman
Kith’ix stayed buried for millennia until Xal’atath - still trapped inside the Blade of the Black Empire - manipulated a Gurubashi troll named Zan’do into finding his resting place. Believing they had discovered an unknown loa, Zan’do’s followers performed blood offerings and finally drove Xal’atath into Kith’ix’s hide to rouse him.
He woke into a world the Old Gods no longer ruled, gathered the surviving Aqir from their tunnels and founded an empire of his own: Azj’Aqir. The war that followed forced the scattered troll tribes into the united Empire of Zul, and the Amani were handed the task of killing Kith’ix directly. They succeeded, and built Zul’Aman on top of his corpse.
That is the official version. Midnight revealed the rest. The Amani were losing badly, and Nek’zali - sister to Strongblood Jak’mo - summoned Ula’tek from the Rift of Aln using blood sacrifices of her own people. Ula’tek defeated Kith’ix but bled out from her wounds soon after. Rather than let a new empire rest on that kind of sacrifice, Jak’mo buried Ula’tek, Nek’zali and her followers together - and Kith’ix beneath them all.
What Patch 12.1.5 Adds
With the seal broken, Kith’ix returns alongside the Aqir armies still buried beneath Eversong Woods and Zul’Aman. The patch brings:
- The Unbinding of Kith’ix - a new one-boss raid continuing the Midnight storyline
- Aqir Invasions - world content arriving in both Eversong Woods and Zul’Aman
- A joint campaign chapter - blood elf and Amani leaders forced into an uneasy alliance to take the fight to Kith’ix directly
- Labyrinths - the other headline system revealed alongside the raid in the 12.1.5 preview
The encounter itself runs across two phases, with Lady Liadrin assisting you directly during the fight. It drops a set of unique cantrip items, which reach Myth 9/6 on Mythic difficulty - a notable number given where the standard Myth track tops out this season.
A single-boss raid with Myth 9/6 loot is an unusually efficient weekly objective, particularly for players who have no appetite for a full Mythic schedule. If you want the cantrips without organising a roster around them, a WoW raid carry handles the encounter in a single lockout.
PTR Testing Details

A few practical details for anyone planning to join later test sessions:
- Entry - speak to Nexus-Lord Donjon Rade in Silvermoon City, Orgrimmar or Stormwind to teleport in while the zone is open
- Character choice - largely irrelevant, since players are scaled to level 90 and to an appropriate item level for the encounter
- Session length - usually around an hour per encounter, though tests end as soon as Blizzard has the data it needs
- Vendors - profession trainers, class set, PvP gear and trinket vendors are all set up in the three capitals on the PTR
How Kith’ix Connects to Xal’atath
Patch 12.1 has felt like a detour from the Worldsoul Saga, and Blizzard has said openly that it loops back. The likeliest reading is not that Kith’ix serves Xal’atath, but the opposite.
Xal’atath was imprisoned in the Blade of the Black Empire by the Old Gods themselves after attempting to deceive and overthrow them. To a general of Kith’ix’s standing, she is a traitor rather than an ally - even though her power was the thing that woke him. Her current plan involves striking at the Worldcore with the Devouring Host sent through the Darkwell, which has very little to do with an Aqir infestation in zones she has already besieged.
That leaves an interesting possibility for Patch 12.2: Kith’ix as an enemy of Xal’atath whom we end up exploiting to locate her. Whether he survives the raid and flees to join her, or his unbinding causes some other consequence that points us in her direction, the answer lands with the 12.1.5 story itself.
